2014-12-09 release

Refactoring of ocular glands, incorporation of new CARO classes, and various improvements in reproductive, skeletal and integumental branches
2014-12-09 release image

Summary

This release sees improvements in the representation of the so-called ocular glands. These have previously been the subject of confusion, especially distinction between Harderian and nictitans glands (both of which are associated with the nictitating membrane). Uberon previously followed the BTO scheme of classifying the Harderian as a lacrimal gland - this has been modified, and the two are now disjoint (although they most likely share a common phylogenetic origin). We also made general improvements to the lacrimal system (pictured). The Mammalian Phenotype (MP) ontology developers did most of the groundwork here (but note the representation in Uberon works for all tetrapods in which these glands are present).

Various new requests for new neuroanatomical classes or synonyms prompted a review of cell layers, and improvement on the CUMBO definition, and alignment with the cell layer category from Neurolex. Integration with Allen atlases is ongoing. The next release will see a switch to a new ID scheme.

The NSF Phenotype RCN sponsored a meeting to create a new version of CARO. Some classes from the pre-release have been incorporated in. More details coming soon.

The Phenoscape project added multiple new classes in the skeletal system.

    • - gigantocellular nucleus definition The gigantocellular nucleus, as the name indicates, is mainly composed of the so called giant neuronal cells. This nucleus has been known to innervate the caudal hypoglossal nucleus, and responds to glutamateric stimuli. The gigantocellular nucleus excites the hypoglossal nucleus, and can play a role in the actions of the said nerve . This nucleus receives connections from the periaqueductal gray, the paraventricular hypothalamic nucleus, central nucleus of the amygdala, lateral hypothalamic area, and parvocellular reticular nucleus. Retrograde studies have shown that the deep mesencephalic reticular formation and oral pontine reticular nucleus project to the nucleus gigantocellularis. The dorsal rostral section of the nucleus reticularis gigantocellularis is also involved mediating in expiration (or out-breathing) along with the parvocellular nucleus.     • - tertiary ovarian follicle definition Ovarian follicle is the basic unit of female reproductive biology and is composed of roughly spherical aggregations of cells found in the ovary. They contain a single oocyte (aka ovum or egg). These structures are periodically initiated to grow and develop, culminating in ovulation of usually a single competent oocyte. These eggs/ova are only developed once every menstrual cycle (i. e, once a month). [WP,unvetted]. { database cross reference=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graafian_follicle }

    • - lens anterior epithelium comment Histology notes: Cells of the subcapsular epithelium (or anterior lens cells) are mitotically active. In adult individuals they only cover the anterior “hemisphere” of the lens. As they divide, cells gradually move towards the equator of the lens where they tranform into lens fibres. The apical part of the gradually elongating cell extends between the subcapsular epithelium and adjacent lens fibres towards the anterior pole of the lens. The basal part extends towards the posterior pole. The nucleus remains close to the equatorial plane of the lens - http://www.lab.anhb.uwa.edu.au/mb140/corepages/eye/eye.htm
